PLAYLIST (Part 1) guided by author Allyson Gottlieb!
Hi there, everyone!
In case this is your first time hearing my name (unsurprising, because I’m still very much a little fish in this big wide pond), music is a huge part of my life, almost as much as writing. So whenever possible, I like to try and combine the two. In most cases, this means making playlists for my books. They’re not exactly background soundtracks—though sometimes a certain song will serve that purpose for a certain scene—but songs that fit with the characters’ moods, relationships, and sometimes even the world.
But why I am telling you this when I can just show you what I mean?
“Beauty from Pain” by Superchick
And all that’s left is to accept that it’s over
I try to keep warm but I just grow colder
I feel like I’m slipping away
This seems like a really depressing song to kick off a playlist, but it’s a pretty perfect fit for Kat’s state of mind at the beginning of the story. What I love about this song, though, is that it’s not just about being in that dark place, but knowing that you’re eventually going to come out of it “as gold purified in these flames.”
“Start of Something Good” by Daughtry
And I’m gonna say what I need to say
And hope to God that it don’t scare you away
Don’t want to be misunderstood
If “Beauty from Pain” was where Kat starts off, this song is for Reynan. Feeling drawn to someone without really knowing them, trying to do the right thing and knowing it might not be interpreted correctly. Worried yet hopeful that this decision will be a good one. All that good stuff.
“All This and Heaven Too” by Florence + the Machine
And the heart is hard to translate
It has a language of its own
And the words are all escaping, and coming back all damaged
I love how these lyrics seem to capture the awkwardness of Kat and Reynan are around each other at the beginning. This song is also about being attracted to someone and not understanding why—very fitting.
“My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” by Fall Out Boy
I’m in the de-details with the devil.
I’m a young lover’s rage
Gonna need a spark to ignite
I didn’t intentionally draw him to be this way, but Reynan ended up having a little problem with his temper. Perhaps it has to do with his daddy issues? I can only imagine that growing up with Alistair (“in details with the devil,” anyone? Hehe) would be enough to make anyone want to punch something.
“Breathe Me” by Sia
Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Poor Kat. So much trauma in her life. I can only hear this song like a plea for help—a soft, barely audible one, uttered by someone who doesn’t want to appear weak but is nearing their breaking point.
“Trouble” by Coldplay
And I lost my head
The thought of all the stupid things I said
And I never meant to cause you trouble
There’s sort of a recurring theme that Reynan blames himself for anything that happens to Kat, whether or not he’s justified in doing so. I always like to laugh at the fact that he’s really the more introspective one, while Kat’s the impulsive, flighty type.
“Fools” by Lauren Aquilina
And so it all boils down to this
We’ve got our aim, but we might miss
We are too fragile just to guess
I might have squealed the first time I heard this song. It just…fits so well. Being scared of ruining something that’s working so well, but unable to deny that you want more from a relationship. And her voice is so floaty and ethereal, perfect for conveying that sense of fragility.

Sometimes you have to lose everything to find what you've really been looking for.
Katherine Zova spends her days patching up soldiers in the Alliance's army while praying for time to heal the wounds on her own broken heart. Crushing loss numbs her waking hours and nightmares threaten her sanity when she closes her eyes. All she wants is to be free, but instead she’s forced to trade one cage for another.
Reynan Caverly wears his uniform only out of loyalty to his father, who in his quest to build a new America has little time to spend with his only son. Indifferent to his sensational Las Vegas lifestyle, all he wants is to feel a connection with someone. A seemingly impossible request—until the day he finds a girl with haunting eyes in a group of captured Alliance soldiers.
Some wounds cut too deep to deal with alone. Sometimes only love can heal. But in a country torn apart by civil war, nothing comes without a price. And for Kat and Reynan, falling in love may cost more than they're willing to pay.
